PCP II’s Renewed Catechesis as a Response to the Call of Renewed Evangelization

Abstract

This study examined PCP II’s renewed catechesis as a primary response to the call for New Evangelization in the Philippine context. It was conceptually anchored in the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines and relevant Catholic teachings on evangelization, catechesis, conversion, and inculturation. Using a naturalistic method and case study design, the research employed deductive presentation and conceptual synthesis. No human respondents were involved; instead, purposively selected Church documents, papal pronouncements, books, and related theological and catechetical materials served as the principal sources of data. The findings showed that renewed catechesis must be Christ-centered, rooted in the Word of God, authentically Filipino, and systematic. Inculturation emerged as the principal process linking catechesis with renewed evangelization by enabling Catholic teaching to remain doctrinally faithful while becoming culturally understandable and relevant to Filipino Catholics. Renewed catechesis was also found to support conversion, faith maturity, meaningful worship, social responsibility, missionary participation, and the renewal of methods, fervor, and expressions. The study concluded that renewed catechesis strengthens the foundations of faith and prepares Filipino Catholics to understand, practice, and communicate Catholic teaching more effectively. It recommended further examination of renewed worship and renewed social apostolate, reassessment of catechetical effectiveness in the Philippines, and wider application of PCP II’s catechetical principles. The study aligns with SDG 4 on quality education, SDG 16 on peace, justice, and strong institutions, and SDG 17 on partnerships. Its sustainability impact lies in supporting educational, cultural, community, and institutional continuity through context-sensitive religious formation and shared ecclesial responsibility.
